Work Work Work

Yes I've been working my little fingers to the bones! Lots of projects for Etsy and possibly Sacramento Indie Craft if I can get my act together and get some paperwork done for it. It was an extremely productive weekend 2 bags and about 15 headbands later it was OVER (Pictures up later I promise!). I still have more to work on with b-days coming up and other misc holidays. This weekend though I'm officially on Vacation going up to the snow with some friends and skiing my little booty off! BT said no super pipe since last year this time I kinda sorta bounced my head off the side of it and tore up my shoulder, which has yet to heal (and I have yet to go to the doctor for it as well). It should be a fun weekend with friends and just kinda hanging out. It will be good to take a break from the crafting and work and life. I'm sure I'll be busy though with projects this week! I also go this little/big gift from my mom at Xmas which I still need to figure out how to use but I will persevere.
It's not really about persevering it's about a promise I made to the UCDavis Water Ski team to embroider some towels for a tournament. So I will probably be reading directions and watching You Tube video's that will guide me through the process!

Too Much on the Brain

My brain is spinning quite literally. I haven't been sleeping at night and Ive narrowed it down to the fact I told BT that I "might be done with crafting". I of course said this out of frustration its not true I swear. Ive run into a few bumps in the road when it comes to crafting and making things work. Well they haven't been working prototype after prototype and no luck! GRRR...So at night I think of new ways to do the projects and then I cant stop thinking. I cant stop my mental creativity which hops from project to project that I want to make. And then when I finally fall asleep I awake and start to think again and I'm up! So thanks to 4 days of little sleep and a flurry of creative thinking. I have more projects I want to make and not enough time! I'm exhausted just thinking about everything.

Thank GOD I can Bake

There are days when I Thank God for giving me the skills to bake. And today was one of them. My office co-workers know its Monday when they walk in the office and see a batch of my newest and finest creations sitting on the front counter. I really think its the only reason they show up early on Monday. This week I made cookies but not just any cookies and for not just any reason. Our New Gal hinted to me that she was looking forward to Monday. So I knew it was time to break out an oldie but goodie. Sugar Cookies. But not just any Sugar Cookie my Mom's recipe which who knows where she got it but I'm pretty sure its from Great Grandma Betsy but I could be wrong. These cookies have the perfect texture are flaky and crisp will drive you made because you cant stop eating them! Best of all they are quick and easy to make and throwing the dough in the fridge wont kill the cookie!

So here I present to you the Sugar Cookie

Ingredients
1 c. powdered sugar
1 c. granulated sugar
1 cube margarine
1 c. cooking oil canola veggie whatever you like but NO Olive Oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
4 c. plus 2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Cream of Tartar (buy it its worth every penny)

Devices
1 spoon
2 mixing bowls
1 drinking glass

Special
1 small bowl of sugar

How too...

Preheat oven to 350-375

Melt margarine, blend with powdered sugar and granulated sugar. Add cooking oil vanilla and eggs. In the 2nd bowl mix together flour baking soda salt and Cream of Tartar. Mix together dry and wet ingredients you have dough!

Make a ball with dough that is about the size of a Walnut and place on cookie sheet. Take drinking glass and dip in bowl of sugar and flatten the dough ball on the cookie sheet you want to leave about 1/2 an inch between each cookie. Place in oven for about 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Guilty Pleasures

Guilty Pleasures well all got them! I myself have more than just a few some of which place me in a category all my own when it comes to weirdness. Boy Toy even has a few one of which is the Peanut Butter and Pickle (yes Pickle) Sandwich. I was a skeptic at first, but then I had a bite and I was hooked. So here is a list of a few of my Guilty Pleasures.

I can not resist listening to her music and singing it out at the top of my lungs. When I've had a bad day or a good day she is my go to girl. In fact her CD is ALWAYS in my CD player in the car.

2. Peanut Butter on Hot Dogs

Don't give me that look. Have you tried it? I didn't think so. This guilty pleasure is full of fat and unknowns. Its a sodium overload but its oooooh so good! My father of all people introduced me to this at a young age it was his version of feeding the kids when mom was away.

3. Watching M*A*S*H*

This series ended in 1983 I wasn't even born yet! But somehow I got hooked.

Now my roommates from college will attest to the fact that I would put this movie in about 2 times a month and sit and watch from start to finish. I'm a girl what can I say and I wish I was a true surfer girl. Yes I can paddle out and ride a wave but not like these girls.

5. Spanish TV Channels

I speak very little Spanish but I still enjoy there shows. I especially enjoy tele novellas and soccer.

6. Cheeze-it's and a can of Coke

I'm really into that salty sweet stuff. Good old Coca-Cola and a handful of Cheeze-its hits the spot every time!

7. Popping zits

Its gross and I should stop, but I love to do this.

8. Plucking BT's eyebrows

He has "Strays" and I believe in a well manicured man. So about every 2-3 weeks its eyebrow plucking time as he sits and screams at me about how much it hurts (I enjoy every minute of it)

9. Dipping pretzels in a can of icing

Again I'm into that salty sweet thing. And the can of icing MUST be vanilla and have a picture of the Pillsbury dough boy on it otherwise its not worth my time

10. Eating and or Drinking while taking a shower!

My roommates always knew that when I took a longer than normal shower it was because I was having a beer. Well this still hasn't stopped in fact it has evolved into eating certain foods in the shower like those card board bar granola bars or fudgesicles (why because i get the best of both worlds warm and cold at the same time!)

Okay so I'm a little off but who cares I'm sure you have some guilty pleasures as well!

V-Day Cup Cakes

Today is Valentines Day, Okay I lied. Really were celebrating V-day at work today and what better to have than cup cakes!

These were actually fairly easy to make but give yourself 2 days to do this why? because the hearts are made of gum paste (the stuff they use to make flowers for wedding cakes). You first have to make the gum paste and then let it set for at least 8 hours. Now don't be scared it does make a lot of gum paste but you can freeze whatever you don't use. Once you have made your shapes you then have to let them set for about 24 hours. Yes its a lot of time so don't expect to go out and do this today. I got the idea for Craft Magazine Vol 10 but you don't have to go out and buy it do learn how to use gum paste the Wilton website has lots of information on it on how to use decorating products.
I did however go out and buy the decorating tips for the icing because I didn't have any. This is something that is very easy to learn it just takes practice. I had about 5 years of practice decorating cakes for an ice cream store I worked for in High School and in College. Don't get frustrated with the writing practice on anything cookies the table top you will get used to it and better at it. It took me 5 years to get my chicken scratch readable. Another hint is to make the icing that is suggested by Wilton to use with the bags and tips. Once you get an idea of what different kinds of icing do you will have a better idea of what kind works for you ( you don't want it to runny but you don't want it super stiff its a balancing act). Other than that have fun and don't worry about the mess its just sugar!

Exiled to the Great White North

So it has become apparent through BT’s numerous comments about being “exiled from the southland” and “away from the comfort of my fandom” that he misses Los Angeles more importantly the bruins. His “relocation away from the sports landscape that (he) has been raised in” has obviously affected him mentally and physically as his new team colors are green and yellow instead of the majestic primary colors of blue and gold. And his new mascot can only sting you while the old one had the ability to eat you alive. What’s a Home Ec Teachers Daughter to do? Well I got some inspiration and made his day by recovering his couch pillows in the colors of his favorite team the UCLA Bruins.

This took me about 3 hours and lots of fabric but it was worth it! What was once a tan couch is now full of color and team spirited for the weekend match ups (which he no longer gets to watch but I’m trying okay!). The tutorial I used is from here! It works great my only suggestion is if you have big pillows like these to add a little extra fabric maybe an extra inch on each side. Next I’ve got to spruce up the smaller pillows with some color…

Internet

I have no Internet. I'm changing my provider and it has turned into a nightmare. I swear they never came out to turn the phone line on but they say they have done everything (yeah okay). So hopefully today my Internet will be resolved and order will be restored. It shouldn't be a big deal to not be connected to the world but as I learned the other day I rely on the Internet a lot especially for maps and addresses. Besides that I no longer have Cable TV as well (they were charging to much and I can watch TV online) so now I'm officially unconnected from the world. Did I mention I don't even have text messaging on my phone because it was gonna cost another $50 a month because to text on my phone you have to have Internet. I'm frustrated can you tell?

What Just Happened

I'm still in Aww or I'm in shock of what I wrote yesterday. I think the GMAT is getting to me and yesterday I was practicing. So please forgive me for my lack of fun and inspiration. I'm not gonna promise that this blog will be fun and or inspirational because I really don't have much to say. Tomorrow I'm working from home and waiting for the phone company to show up so I can set up DSL. The cable I have is way to expensive so I'm dumping it and getting something different. This weekend is looking pretty bleak with having to work on my Taxes (I'm an accountant this should be like waiting to go to Disneyland, but to be honest I'm not looking forward to it). I'm also going to attempt to get some crafting done mainly for BT and then a few things for my place but nothing serious. Lets hope I can get a lot done and have a project to show you. I will however have the February tree pictures up as soon as I take them! Well if I don't post this weekend have a Happy Pre Valentines Weekend!

Yippie!!!

So guess what came in the mail yesterday??? Not a clue hu? Well its starts with a C and ends with raft. That's right Craft Magazine vol. 10, eye candy for any crafter(I actually started to drool when I saw it in the mail box). This magazine has the ability to open my eyes to the wonders of crafters who are more creative than me and there projects turn out about 100 times better than mine. This month they have focused on Celebration's, what kinds you ask well anything you want to celebrate birthdays, Anniversaries, Holidays, your amazing significant other, National Spam day whatever you want! I was glad to see a magazine focusing on the positive. I haven't been able to read CNN or a newspaper since the fall of the economy. It is depressing they focus on everything bad in the world instead of giving us some hope or a light at the end of the tunnel that we will be okay.

If you didn't already know this I have a degree in Economics and Art History (and a kinda sorta degree certificate thingy in Accounting that gives me enough credit to take the CPA which was a complete and utter failure hence the GMAT decision). Talk about two degrees that don't match. Well unless you like math and your creative so I guess then it might work for you. The entire situation with the economy baffles me even after studying it for 4 years. The rise the fall the lets try and make it better by stimulating the economy. When you learn something in economics its based upon a MODEL and this model is the utopia of any Utopian society. You can predict what that economy will do then try to apply it to our dysfunctional every changing economy. It just doesn't work in the real world (it took me 4 years to discover this). But speaking of Economics on the home front is the CSPIA or Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which is to be passed on February 10, 2009 (which was the only negative thing in the Craft magazine Vol 10 I could find).

If you haven't heard about it in the crafting community here is the run down of what its about. This Act is designed to increase the safety of products geared towards children under the age of 12 (products can be toys, clothing, school supplies, the list could go on forever). Mainly in the terms of Lead based products. It also provides a provision that items will need to be tested by certified inspection agencies. Most of us are all for safety and improving safety for children (how many of us licked the lead based paint on the wall of our houses?). This act could lead to better lives and improved health for children. But what about you the consumer and the producer?

As an economist (and I use this term lightly) I see the good the bad and the evil of this Act.

The good
1. Improved Safety
2. Better quality of life (less stress on parent worrying about if the products they buy are safe)
3. More jobs (with the testing of products more people will need to be employed to test all the new products created for children)

The Bad
1. The price of the products you buy will increase (now don't think that the producer is going to absorb all of it no no no he will pass it down to the consumer YOU!)
2. The price of production will rise (producers will have to send items off to be tested costing money, money they might not have)
3. Production of children's products will slow causing less products produced for children per year.
4. Less selection and diversity of products for children (whose minds need to be stimulated while growing)

The Evil
1. With the price of production rising small business will be forced out of business.
2. Large businesses may also close there doors as it may not be profitable to make children's toys anymore.
3. Crafters (who are even smaller than small businesses) will no longer be able to provide the individualized specialized products you like to buy for your kids.
4. Large businesses will Rule the World (larger businesses are usually able to sustain through new legislation and are able to afford new testing and new ways of production where as small businesses cant keep up with trying to afford to test products.)

The Big Question at the end of this is who wins? I agree that Children's products should be as safe as possible. Many Crafters started there business on these principles and have created products that are safer than what many of the large companies produce in mass scale. Why should Crafters and Small businesses suffer? They are the entrepreneurs trying to get off the ground with there AMAZING products. With the new ACT in place the unemployment rate may actually increase instead of decreasing. The price of products will increase and during these dire economic times who will be able to afford these items. Large businesses could monopolize the markets making it even harder for people to create small businesses and compete.
The effects of this are mind boggling. In my eyes NOW is NOT the time. With the economy in turmoil and and end not in the near future, by taking away income from people just trying to make it by would create an even worse economy. I know for myself as a Crafter selling online I don't make much a month, but it does help put money away for that house I'm looking forward to buy one day. I do believe that one day there will need to be stricter rules on products for children, but the legislation needs to be written in a way as to not kill a reviving industry such as crafting.

The only upside to this story is that the legislation has been granted a stay (meaning its not going to be passed in 6 days) for one year to "provide some temporary, limited relief to the crafters, children’s garment manufacturers and toy makers who had been subject to the testing and certification required under the CPSIA. These businesses will not need to issue certificates based on testing of their products until additional decisions are issued by the Commission. However, all businesses, including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small businesses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards and similar requirements, including the lead and phthalates provisions of the CPSIA". This is good news for now, but will be interesting to see what happens in the next year with the revisions of this legislation. Hopefully there can be some compromise which not only increases safety but also keeps the crafting and small business industry thriving.
Note that I'm not an expert on this and have made some practical observations of the implication of this legislation. And I cant believe what a Debby downer I became by the end of this. I'm trying to shed some light on this and give different POV's of people, obviously there is no right answer to this problem. Crafting has been around for centuries and it would be a shame to see this industry disappear because of the cost of testing products yet, it would also be horrific to see more children dieing because of faulty products.

Cheaters Never Prosper...yeah okay

Its Tuesday and I'm debating the purchase of an SLR camera. Costco has them and they are a good deal but then I think about the Economy and say NO save your money! The birthday is a few months away maybe I can strike a deal with mom. But onto another topic. Patterns!!!

How do I start this...I'm a CHEATER! I'm letting it out I love to Cheat. Why because its easier and well it saves time so who says cheating is always bad? Why am I talking about cheating? Ever wanted to make something personalized with a name or logo on it? Always seem to reach a dead end to find that pattern? Well I have an answer well at least for a quilter, crocheter, needle pointer, and cross-stitcher. KNIT PRO.

This program has been my life saver when trying to make thing for friends or making things for myself. It takes a photo or picture and puts a grid over it. I know that Photoshop/Illustrator can do that but who has the money for those programs? They come out a little fuzzy so I usually take a marker and clean it up a bit, but it works wonders. Ive made a few cross stitches from this along with a crochet pattern (which I have yet to start but I don't have the supplies since I'm on restriction).

Woohoo Weekends

Well the weekend blew by like a bullet train. Friday was a long day with blood being taken and me running around like a chicken with my head cut off for work. But the best part was Saturday when two (yes TWO not just ONE but TWO) of my friends came to Sac Town to visit! It was a camera free weekend because we tend to do regrettable acts when the camera makes an appearance. So I will let you make a mental picture of all the debauchery or lack there of in your own mind. My first friend arrived On Time as expected from a 2 hour drive down the lovely 99 hwy to inform me that our other friend would be late. Apparently her Boy Toy showed up unexpectedly at her place to spend time with her that evening. Now by unexpectedly I mean the friend who showed up on time had suggested to him that he Suprise our friend, showing up at her place and spend the evening with her and he actually took her advice (when do boys actually take the advice from the girl friends friends???). He isn't exactly a early riser nor does he hop out of bed with energy (more like sloth like actions taking a while to wake up and drag himself out of bed). So we sat and chatted and well chat turned into talk that I cant talk about on this blog because then I would have to put some kind of parental advisory on the blog and no one wants that especially me (I need more people to actually read my blog and leave comments)
Finally the 3rd musketeer showed up and joined in our conversations about boys and unmentionables and the new boy in our friends life who is apparently clingy (dating one week does not make it official nor does it mean you can hang all over us we barely know you!). About and hour later we were able to coax ourselves away from the conversation to take a car ride out to the new mall in Roseville (well its not new they just have new stores). I apparently went crazy and shopped till i dropped getting new slacks and shirts and anthropology, all on sale don't give me that look. Once we got home it was time to get ready for the evening which meant a trip to trader Joe's for pizza supplies. Now I had never done this before so my friends taught me how to make pizza from the pre-made dough (and it was amazing but more about that later).

So after the Trader Joe's Stop we went to the apt and picked up our stuff for the evening and headed to Boy Toy's to make dinner drink be merry and of course have fun! We arrived at Boy Toys to find out that he had fully stocked the fridge with drinks and mixers (there was a big smile on every one's face). We started off with the pizza's which were easy to make and turned out delicious. We made a meat lovers (used left over meatballs from BT's Spaghetti) a Tomato cheese pizza and then finally a cheese pizza. We also got different kinds of crust one of which was a garlic crust talk about addictive. I could buy this and make garlic twist out of this with little or no additives. Needless to say we didn't finish the pizzas because they make a Cookie sheet sized pizza but we were close! The rest of the evening was full of movies, TV and an HBO late night show (which I again will not discuss further than we learned a lot in this informational show). By about 10 we were ready to crash. Now this just shows how old we are getting. Just 3 short years ago we were able to go out and stay up till 2am without any assistance and now were in bed by 9 out by 10 and up at the crack of dawn to work for The Man. Sad sad Life.

The next morning was again interesting but fun with the girls getting in bed with me and BT to watch GREEK. BT mentioned how he needs to post on his Facebook that he is in bed with 3 women. We all looked at him and rolled our eyes as we were fully clothed and still had bed head from the night before. I know what a pretty pictures do you now know why we didn't bring out the camera? Then it was off to my place to make breakfast and the girls were on there way home. And I had to start getting ready for the Superbowl (which means researching a chili recipe and that was it). Boy Toy and I ended up watching the Superbowl he working off the hang over and me exhausted from being with the girls.

Overall...Weekend was a Success and will be doing this again!
*Note: Remember how I said I didn't have a camera? Well I didn't I'm borrowing the photos! Maybe if i have time ill take pictures of our pizza which didn't turn out as pretty as the one photoed.
